Automotive Blog

Recently, at AA Automotive Locksmiths we have had several customers who have called stating they are having problems programming their cars or trucks to accept new Automotive Transponder / Chip Keys.  They have followed the instructions in the owners manual or information available on our website.

Ford Transponder Key

To add one or more new Automotive ignition keys  to the vehicle’s onboard computer through On-Board-Programming procedure that will start the car, to be successful you must have the proper Transponder Chip Key for your make and model of car or truck and the transponder keys should be removed fro the key ring so other keys or tags do not interfere wth the programming process.  These itmes can block the RF signal and prevent the new key from being successfully added to the on-board computer.  This precaution should be taken with all transponder keys, whether using On-Board Programming or plug in computer or board.

The next two (2) AA Automotive Blogs with be how to program the Ford Vehicles One (1) Key System and the Ford Two (2) Key System.

If you have any questions call or e-mail Terry Whin-Yates (3rd Generation Locksmith) or Royce Whin-Yates (4th Generation Locksmith) and Automotive Locksmith.

Program General Motors Ignition Keys (PK3*, PK3+*, and Circle Plus* Keys) 10-10-10

You can program your General Motors Transponder or chip keys yourself if you follow these simple instructions and it only takes 30-35 minutes.

General Motors PK3*, PK3+*, and Circle Plus* keys can be programmed even if you have lost the original ignition key but you have to have the new key cut so that it will turn in the igntion.

The Procedure for this is as follows:

1. Insert a new cut key in ignition and turn key to the ON position for
10 minutes (or until the security light goes out).

2. Within 45 seconds turn the key to OFF and then back to the ON position for
10 minutes (or until the security light goes out).

3. Within 45 seconds turn the key to OFF and then back to the ON position for
10 minutes (or until the security light goes out).

4. Turn key OFF then back ON. The key is now programmed.
Start vehicle to test key.

The method will work on most General Motors cars using PK3*, PK3+*, and Circle Plus* keys.
If you have lost all your keys and need 24hr Emergency Locksmith service call us at AA Automotive Locksmiths.

Lost Keys to Ford Mustang

January 4th, 2011

At AA Automotive Locksmiths we specialize in helping people who have Lost keys to almost any car or truck and especially Ford Mustangs.

Ford Mustangs from 1996 to 2010 (more on the 2011 in a future Blog) have a transponder or chip key programmed which communicates to your car computer and the car will not start unless this key is used.

If a person loses their keys they have to have a Automotive locksmith, Mr. Prolock Professional Locksmith or Mr. Locksmith or the Ford Dealer make replacement keys and program the new transponder keys to start the car.

1996-1998 year Mustangs only require 1 key for duplication and it can be duplicated by an automotive locksmith with the right electronic equipment. Even road side or at your home or business.

1998 to 2010 Mustangs require TWO keys to make a duplicate. To add a third key you can follow the directions and do it yourself. However, if you have lost all your keys or have only one working ignition that starts the car you will require an Automotive Locksmith or the Dealer.

At AA Automotive Locksmiths we have the transponder keys and computer interface to reprogram your Ford Mustang. We can add a new key or delete the lost keys from starting the car.
At AA Automotive Locksmiths Royce Whin-Yates ( 4th Generation Locksmith) have the transponder keys and computer interface to reprogram your Ford Mustang. He can add a new key or delete the lost keys from starting starting your Mustang.

In a future Blog I will discuss Forensic Locksmithing and a new warning about a new way for auto theives to steal Ford Mustangs and some simple methods to deter or prevent this from happening to you.

Unfortunately, in the past it took to steal a Ford Mustang took special equipment and keys, and a minimum of 10 minutes to reprogram but now “gone in 30 seconds” in the new reality.

Adding Transponder (Chip) keys to a Ford Mustang.

Ford Mustangs from 1996 to 2010 (more on the 2011 in a future Blog) have a transponder or chip key programmed which communicates to your car computer and the car will not start unless this key is used.

The following is the procedure for programing a THIRD key.

1) Insert an existing key and turn the ignition to ON (Run) and then back to OFF.

2) Within 5 seconds insert the 2ND existing key and turn the ignition to ON and then back to OFF.

3) Within 10 seconds insert the NEW 3rd key and turn the ignition to the ON position. Leave it ON for 1 second and then back to OFF.

The security light will light up for 3 seconds to indicate that the NEW key has been successfully programmed.

If you only have one working key that starts the car or have lost your keys, you will need to call me or Royce Whin-Yates (4th Generation Locksmith) to make and program new Ford Transponder keys to your car or your Ford Dealer.

Check my next AA Automotive Locksmith Blog and I will discuss Forensic Locksmithing and a new trend in auto theft of Ford Mustangs.

If you have any questions e-mail or call.

Thanks

Transponder keys or “chip keys” have chip imbedded in the plastic head of the ignition key. Most automotive transponder keys do not require a battery, however the automotive remotes or keys with the remote on the key do need batteries to open the car but not start the car. When the transponder key that has been programmed to match the car is inserted into the ignition the car’s computer transmits a coded signal to the cars computer and you can start the car.

However, if an upprogrammed key or someone tries to force the ignition no coded signal is sent to the cars computer the car will not start. Transponder (chip) automotive keys is the major reason the top ten cars stolen in Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada are not transponder equipped.

Top ten most stolen cars in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia do not have transponder (chip) key security systems and will be be on the top ten list for years to come.
1. Honda Civic 1995, 2000
2. Chrysler (Dodge/Plymouth)
Caravan / Voyager 1995, 1994
3. Honda Accord 1992, 1990
4.Ford F-series 2005, 2006
5. Jeep Cherokee 1994, 1993
6. Toyota Camry 1988, 1987
7. Chrysler (Dodge/Plymouth) Neon 1995, 1998
8. Dodge Ram 1996, 1998
9. Toyota Corolla 2006
10. Ford Taurus 1997, 1998

In conclusion, car thieves will continue to steal cars not equipped with security systems, transponder (chip) key equipped newer cars or cars without steering locks. A very simple steering wheel lock and alarm immobilizer system can prevent your older car from being stolen.
